“Every Child Matters” is a powerful phrase and movement that honors the Indigenous children who suffered and died in the Canadian residential school system, while recognizing the ongoing intergenerational trauma and advocating for truth and reconciliation
The phrase “Every Child Matters” and Orange Shirt Day originate from the true story of Phyllis Webstad. In 1973, six-year-old Phyllis went to the St. Joseph Mission residential school in British Columbia. Her grandmother had bought her a bright, new orange shirt, but school staff took it away and never gave it back, making her feel like she did not matter.
The phrase honors residential school survivors, remembers the children who did not come home, and affirms that every child has always mattered.
